Barbershop or Bust!

High School Singers Enjoy Barbershop or Bust! 2010

Wynne High School auditorium was ringing with the sounds of barbershop harmony chords on Saturday, January 16, 2010 as it was the site of Barbershop or Bust! -- a day of music training, performance and fun for 122 young men from 13 high schools from around Arkansas and from Arkansas State University. The program, held each year at various locations around the country, is designed to introduce young men to high-quality, four-part harmony.

The Diamond State Chorus of Little Rock and the Barbershop Harmony Society, headquartered in Nashville, sponsored the day of harmony. Providing musical direction was Jim DeBusman, who retired in December 2009 as a music specialist for the Barbershop Harmony Society, where he oversaw quartet promotion and development and coordinated the activities of the Society's volunteer Music & Performance Vice Presidents in local chapters around the world.

DeBusman selected the music the boys were to learn, and the Diamond State Chorus provided sheet music and learning CDs to the students prior to the event so they could prepare for the day of instruction leading to the evening concert. In addition to providing some of the funding for the event, members of the Diamond State Chorus acted as section leaders for the boys and sang in the concert. Two quartets from the Chorus also performed in the concert.

Dan Phillans, choir director at Wynne High School, worked with choir directors from around the state to bring the boys to the event. He also coordinated meals for the boys and the other support activities required to make the event a success. Phillans complimented the members of the Diamond State Chorus who, in his words, worked "very hard to pass along the secrets of barbershop harmony" to the students.
